Historical Collections

The ULB holds valuable collections which you can search, for the most part, via our Search Portal. Among these are manuscripts, incunabula, rare books, bequests, special collections and historical libraries. The ULB holdings also include the Thomas-Mann-Collection – one of the largest collections of works by and about Thomas Mann in German-speaking regions.

The Collections in Detail
  • Manuscript CollectionThe ULB owns about 400 manuscripts from the 9th to the 16th century, as well as several modern manuscripts.
  • IncunabulaAlso, the ULB is in possession of 998 prints from the 15th century, completely or fragmentary preserved.
  • Rare BooksCirca 3,200 prints of the 16th century, circa 7,400 prints of the 17th and roughly 25,000 prints of the 18th century are available for you at the ULB.
  • Bequests, Special Collections, and Historical LibrariesLearn more about bequests, collections with thematic or material-specific focus, as well as historical libraries of individuals and institutions.

  • Special Reading RoomIn the Special Reading Room, you can access manuscripts, incunabula, rare books, maps, posters, bequests, the Thomas-Mann-Collection and further collections.
