University Archives of the Heinrich Heine University
The University Archives was founded as an administrative department of the University- and State Library (ULB) in 2001. It collects and holds documents of the University and the University Hospital which are of historical or legal value and derive from the fields of research, teaching and administration. Also records of the predecessor institutions of the HHU, Düsseldorf’s Medical Academy and the Rhineland School of Education section Neuss, are to be found in the University Archives.
In addition, the University Archives documents student life and student self-government at the HHU and collects bequests (‘Vorlässe’ and ‘Nachlässe’) from the University environment. Besides documents from the administration, there are also leaflets, posters, flyer, as well as site plans and photographs from the beginnings of the university up to the present.
Among the numerous bequests are those of Arthur Schlossmann, the founder of the medical academy, and of his daughter Erna Eckstein-Schlossmann and his son-in-law Albert Eckstein. Of special importance for research on medical history are the bequests of the physicians Walter and Elisabeth von Oettingen consisting of circa 640 glass plate negatives with motives from the time of the Russo-Japanese War (1904/05) and the First World War (1914-1918).
