Interlibrary Loan

Journal articles can be ordered via mail. German libraries are able to send patrons journal articles digitally until the 31th of May. While this service is normally prohibited due to copyright issues, exceptions have been made by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) and Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort (VG Wort). Orders can only be sent to you via mail, so make sure to put down an e-mail address in your profile.

Books and book chapters can now be ordered by students and employees of HHU. Please send your order to: fernleihe[at]ulb.hhu.de  using your university E-Mail and specify your university credentials (Unikennung) in the E-Mail. Interlibrary Loan fees are waived at this time. Questions regarding interlibrary loans are answered in our FAQ.

Literature that is not available in libraries in Düsseldorf can be requested via inter-library loan. We arrange for such literature to be provided by other libraries in Germany and other countries. You need a valid library card issued by ULB Düsseldorf to request such material.

The alternative for interlibrary loan: the purchase suggestion

Instead of using the interlibrary loan, you can also make a purchase suggestion. This is especially worth a try for rather new books

  • that have been published in Germany
  • and  that could be also of interest for other readers.

Of course you can also suggest foreign literature, but please do consider that purchasing older and foreign publications may take longer than an interlibrary loan.

Interlibrary Loan – This is how it works:

After logging-in to the interlibrary loan portal with your user ID and password, you can search for a book or a journal and, if necessary, add detailed information on the required article or book chapter and send off your order request.

Important Information on Interlibrary Loan

  • Interlibrary Loan orders are fee-based (1,50 €), and these fees are also due if the respective documents cannot be provided.
  • Articles from newspapers and so-called kiosk magazines (such as Focus, Stern, etc.) may not be delivered via interlibrary loan for copyright reasons (§ 60e UrhG).
  • Some items – especially Diploma-, Master-, Bachelor-, Magister-, and examination theses – may not be supplied, or only with great difficulty.
  • Regarding multi-volume works, one order has to be placed for one volume each according to the Leihverkehrsordnung (LVO; Loan Transaction Order).
