Book appraisals

Does your family own an old book and you want to know if it is valuable and/or rare? What should be borne in mind when preserving or restoring books? The experts from ULB’s State Library and Special Collections division are able to answer countless questions on old books – be they medieval manuscripts, incunabula or prints from past centuries or handwritten bequests, letters or suchlike.

Appraisals currently take place via video conference (WebEx) or email.

Please make an appointment to have a maximum of five books appraised and indicate the exact title, author, place of publication, year of publication and publisher of each book in the booking form comments field. You’ll be sent a weblink to join the video conference at the booked time at the latest one day before your appointment. All you need is a computer (PC or laptop) with internet access and video and audio capabilities. As we need a little time to prepare for the appraisal, the appointment should be booked no later than two days before the consultation.

You can use Webex via your browser; you do not need to install the Webex app.

See here for information about the processing of personal data by Webex.

We alternatively offer the option of emailing us the details of a maximum of five books, along with photos of the title page and cover. On the day of the book appraisal, you’ll receive an appraisal of the books indicated.

Please email the details and photos to sonderlesesaal(at)ulb.hhu.de at the latest two days before the appraisal date.

The book appraisal will take place in the library, if the infection situation and the Corona Protection Ordinance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia permit it. If not, we will switch back to an online format. In this case, participants will receive a notification.
