State library

In 1993, the Düsseldorf University and State Library (ULB), together with the university and state libraries in Bonn and Münster, was tasked with providing the legally defined library services for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. ULB’s present-day status as a state library can be traced back to 1770 when Charles Theodore, the Elector of Palatinate, had the predecessor institution established, the public Bibliothèque für das Herzogtum Jülich-Berg. ULB remains true to its 250-year tradition and preserves the cultural legacy of the city and federal state.
