Research and teaching services

Preserving and communicating the cultural legacy and making it available for research and teaching is one of the main tasks of ULB’s State Library and Special Collections division. Close cooperation and networking with the HHU institutes is important to us.

We can gladly support you in your research projects on the collections. We make our data available and work with you to create exhibitions and events about our collections. Teaching students how to work with historical and contemporary collections is also important to us.

Would you like to learn more about ULB’s collections with a group of students?

We can gladly present our collections, which include everything from medieval manuscripts to contemporary prints. This offer is aimed at both students and teaching and research staff. Presentations can be tailored to your specific needs and interests.

Would you like to include holdings from our collection in an exhibition? Then we can gladly assist. We regularly present exhibitions in our foyer or virtually together with seminars. A selection of our projects are listed below. Please feel free to contact us.

The ULB has been involved in the Watermark Information System project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since the start of 2010. This project aims to make decentralised collections of watermarks accessible and presentable in a common, freely accessible database. A total of 121,000 images of watermarks with their metadata (motif, place of inscription, manuscript they feature in, etc.) have been recorded so far. This includes all watermarks from Piccard Online and around 40,000 watermarks from collections that have not yet been indexed. The indexing is based on a uniform hierarchical classification system.
